Design and Wonder in the Everyday

Out of the mouths of babes come Axe Cop

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Axe Cop is, without a doubt, the funniest online comic there is. Written by 5-year-old Malachai Nicolle and illustrated by his 29-year-old brother Ethan Nicolle, Axe Cop holds all the charm of a little boy’s comically absurdist and gruesome imagination. We’ve never laughed so much reading a comic.

And if there’s any doubt whether Malachai is the true genius behind the writing, they’ve posted a video of their process.

Illustrator Joshua Middleton’s use of color, lighting, and figure provide his depictions of comic book icons with a sense of intimate realism. When viewing his artwork, we see the characters as though through the lens of a real world camera. To put it plainly, his characters seem unaware of being viewed, and this lends a humanness I’ve not seen in other works. Add to that his use of lighting, which further draws out the characters and environments from the page, and you have an amazing collection of artwork. Just incredible.

Well done, sir, now post more stuff in your store!

Comic battles stigma

Cartoonist Darryl Cunningham is getting some well-deserved attention for his upcoming book Psychiatric Tales. The book challenges the stigma associated with mental illness and debunks commonly held stereotypes. From what he posted online so far on, it looks like a wonderfully illustrated and well-informed piece. Let’s hope this sells a lot of copies. View chapters from the book on bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
