Design and Wonder in the Everyday

Cutsie, vacuous supes and foes

All hail Chris Uminga and his grungy yet cute stylized heroes and villains. That is all. Well, that and check out his gallery.

Splotch heroes

French artist Arian Noveir is rocking the splotches. If these are Rorshach tests, I’m more of a geek than I thought. I see heroes yo. His DeviantArt site.

In a Deck of Type, Papyrus and Comic Sans are the Jokers

Kudos to Adam Bauer for making type cool for the masses. Sadly, they are not YET available for order, but happily, they soon will be. In the meantime, visit his site.

Porcelain Unicorn

The winner of Parallel Line’s short film contest had two bog requirements. One, that be under three minutes and two, it needed to use the following lines as dialog:

What’s That?
It’s a Unicorn
Never seen one up close before
Beautiful
Get away, get away
I’m sorry.

What ywilco105 did with just these requirements is incredible. Apparently, judge Ridley Scott thought so too.

All is Not Lost

You have to hand it to OK Go, they keep setting the bar higher and higher for themselves and they keep bringing it. They combine some great feet choreography (you’ll see what I mean) to make a fun interactive video where viewers can make customized messages. See mine here.  For your viewing pleasure, go directly to their site.

Slightly Sticky Art

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, art today is very much the process and where the humanity lies within it. With technology able to produce incredible spectacles, the wonder and delight of art lies in the human sweat and artistry involved. This may be a public display to promote a Brazilian shoemaker, but you can’t deny the artistry involved. 350,000 Post It notes and 25 animators. Incredible. Don’t forget the “making of” video.

“Letterpress” by Naomie Ross

While I watch Naomie Ross‘ video, I think “I LOVE the skill and knowledge involved as well as the tactile quality of a press,” but the first thought I have at the end is, “Wow, that’s a lot of trouble.” In any case, this is wonderfully shot and edited. Definitely check her other videos out as well.

Holy Smokes: Constantine Lighter

Whether you know the movie or not, you have to admire this Constantine Zippo. Don’t smoke? Who cares? All this for heat for a cool $149 (and your soul). What bargain!

And that’s just the brass version. Check out the gold version below.
