Design and Wonder in the Everyday

Out of the mouths of babes come Axe Cop

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Axe Cop is, without a doubt, the funniest online comic there is. Written by 5-year-old Malachai Nicolle and illustrated by his 29-year-old brother Ethan Nicolle, Axe Cop holds all the charm of a little boy’s comically absurdist and gruesome imagination. We’ve never laughed so much reading a comic.

And if there’s any doubt whether Malachai is the true genius behind the writing, they’ve posted a video of their process.

Hold Your Horses

Brilliant video by Hold Your Horses for their song 70 Million. How many paintings do you recognize?

“He’s Barack Obama” by JibJab

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

The LOLs keep rolling out from JibJab. They’ve come a long way from the marionette-type animation that made them famous with the Kerry vs. Bush “This Land” video. This time they employ the use of slick animation to poke fun at President Obama’s “superhuman” powers. Like Megan Fox, it’s great for laughs and well designed (you know what I mean).

A rundown of Apple’s multi-banner Web ads

Monday, May 18th, 2009

These “Get a Mac” coordinated web ads are fun to watch not to mention brilliant. I’d be curious to see the traffic spikes at the websites. Would these sites charge Apple to host these ads considering the page views?

Apple’s decision to air/post them for limited times only adds to the buzz. The first one in the list was just posted and pulled today. Enjoy.

Hello Kitty’s freakish skull

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

While I can’t stand over-the-top advertising and the saturation of public places with adverts, I do acknowledge that it does keep talented artists fed and clothed. In my opinion, good advertising — strong emphasis on good — is more art and delight than product pimp. Of course, my opinion means nothing. In any case, let me whore out this one great piece of advertising promoting SHS Teen Clothes. It’s funny and well shot. (Hello Kitty’s skull is freaky cute.)
