The artist behind “Batman: Arkham City”?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I don’t know who’s behind the art of the Batman: Arkham City video game, but I wish I did. The use of white as the dominant color is refreshing for the Bat. If you know who did it, please send me an e-mail.

Comic book artist Adam Hughes

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Comic book artist Adam Hughes is well known for his realism, attention to detail, and depiction of anatomy. I’ve chosen to highlight Catwoman as just one of the many characters he’s captured through his tenure working for geektastic corporations, but he’s also worked a on the Tomb Raider and Wonder Woman properties. Be sure to check out his DeviantArt page.

The new pitch

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

No doubt inspired by Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez’s success with Hollywood after his incredible Ataque de Panico took the Web by storm, other directors and studios are getting in on the action through the art of the short film. Both Azureus Rising and Cup of Tears are hoping to be made into feature-length films.

Say what you will about Nike, the corporation gives creative talent incredible freedom. Check out this spot by AKQA San Francisco and UK-based design boutique ilovedust for Nike’s Sister One campaign. Reminds me of MTV’s Liquid Television.

Krab cake

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Based on this fantastic Mr. Krabs cake entry on Food Network’s Spongebob cake challenge, Lauren Kitchens is possibly the most talented sugar artist we’ve ever seen. Okay, we’re biased because of our love of all things Spongebob. Still, check out her blog.

Avatar: The Last Airbender's Appa in cake form

Cake Sushi

Yes, that’s Appa from “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” a serving of beautiful sushi, and a Canon in cake form. Sugar artist Ann Sumimoto makes cake look so cool you almost don’t want to eat them. Almost. We found Sumimoto’s work through a mutual friend on Facebook who told us that not only do her cakes look incredible, they taste delicious. Amazingly, Sumimoto currently doesn’t make a living at this, she does it for fun. She’s considering going pro in Honolulu, but needs a gentle nudge. If you like cake (and we know you do), please leave her some encouragement by becoming a fan of her Facebook fan page and leaving some comments. We who love cake salute you!

The illustrations of Guy-Pascal Vallez

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Illustrator Guy-Pascal Vallez uses high contrast and vibrant old-world colors to evoke a sense of the sacred. Indeed his illustrations almost look as though they are stained glass set in some twisted — yet impeccably cool — church. (Thanks to Gorilla Artfare for featuring his work.)
